3 legendary warriors reintroduced in Mortal Combat: Battle of the Realms

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, an animated film produced by Warner Bros., and its on-board fighters are new faces in the Legendary series. The sequel to Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge in 2020, Battle of the Realms in 2021 is the second such film in the Mortal Combat franchise developed by Warner Bros., which took over the franchise from Midway Games in 2009. Over 10 of the years later, in the era of live-action reboots, the animated film series offers new twists and turns to the original stories and characters of the franchise.

Additionally, the interconnected stories of Scorpion’s Revenge and Battle of the Realms mostly stay true to the original Mortal Kombat lore. Outworld, Netherrealm, and Earthrealm fighters continue their fight against each other for control. Additionally, the legendary Mortal Kombat tournament is alive and well, fought under the watchful eyes of the Elder Gods. Even longtime fans of the original Mortal Kombat play in the series.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Dead Men Tell No Tales had reintroduced many original characters from the franchise. This includes Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Quan Chi, Goro, Kano, Jax Briggs, Reptile, Shao Khan, Shang Tsung, and Kitana. Needless to say, not all of them made it through the first outing. As Battle of the Realms continues where Scorpion’s Revenge left off, many other fighters have joined us. These are 3 of these fighters who were reintroduced in the animated film.

1. Kung Lao

Obviously, the most dazzling omission from Scorpion’s Revenge was Kung Lao. In Battle of the Realms, Kung Lao initially appears to be fighting for Wuxi Monastery against invading forces from Outworld, but later succumbs to his injuries at the hands of Emperor Shao Khan during the tournament. Mortal Kombat’s Kung Lao is the latest descendant of Grand Kung Lao – the undefeated champion of the first tournament. As Kung Lao was also beaten by Khan in the original games, he eventually returned. This is unlikely to happen in the Mortal Kombat Legends series – as it was literally ripped in two by Shao Khan.

2. Stryker

In the sequel to Mortal Kombat Legends, police personnel Kurtis Stryker initially appear at Wuxi Monastery, fighting as an ally of Kung Lao, Sonya, and Jax of the Outworld forces. After which he signs up for the tournament and beats Baraka but is eventually sent by Shang Tsung, who possesses Stryker and controls him to rip his head off. During matches, Stryker is just as ambiguous about his choice for the tournament as he is in Battle of the Realms. Instead of being beheaded, he became a revenant fighting for the evil wizard Quan Chi.

3. Jade

Assassin fighter Jade initially appears in Battle of the Realms alongside Princess Kitana, both of whom are members of the group leading the Outworld attack on Earthrealm. Subsequently, in the middle of the tournament, she is beaten by Liu Kang, however, her death is not confirmed. During the games, she has a similar story as Kitana’s close ally and helps her even when the princess goes against the Emperor. This is likely a clue as to whether or not Jade will be re-entering future installments of the Mortal Kombat Legends series.
