With several high-profile games like Black Ops Cold War, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and now Far Cry 6 commanding 100GB facilities, M.2 expansion storage on the PS5 is no longer negotiable. Console’s internal 667 GB SSD fills up quick. The sizes are just obnoxious, even with the PS5’s compression technology, which can drastically cut data into manageable chunks. So why are games so big?

Lately I’ve been familiar with the PS5’s storage management screen. I am currently testing multiple M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSDs in transfer rates and load speeds, which involves a lot of data migrations back and forth. As I walked through the screens, I noticed that some PS5 games break down the installed data and tell you what’s included. Apparently, it’s not the actual games that are huge, but the staggering amount of data for voiceovers and dialogue.

Take Far Cry 6, for example. The game reaches almost 95 GB with the HD texture pack installed. Voiceover data takes up 72% of the total space required (~ 69 GB of 95 GB total).

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the same. Voice data for Valhalla takes up 75% of the data (72 GB out of 95 GB total installation size).

Not all games have this information listed. Cyberpunk 2077, for example, records at 100.5GB but doesn’t have a crash like this – its installation is simply listed as “game data.”

Then there are some weird anomalies like Control Ultimate Edition. The control takes up 26.17 GB of space on the PS5’s SSD and 26.08 GB is for English voiceover data. It is not possible that the whole of Control has been reduced to just 90MB.

We would really like to know what happens with Control’s install size on the PS5, but it’s likely that it was compressed by the PS5’s built-in compression APIs to some extent, which is not. reflected in the metrics here.

Still, it’s good to know exactly how much data is being used by the game itself and the insanely massive voiceover data.
