StoryCast ’21: “If I had ripped my glove, it was over” – Tim Peake tells the story of Britain’s first spacewalk | UK News

On December 15, 2015, Tim Peake took off in a Soyuz rocket to begin his journey to become the first official British astronaut to visit the International Space Station.

The father-of-two, from Chichester, West Sussex, is said to participate in more than 250 science experiments during a turbulent six-month mission to the ISS, which orbits Earth at an altitude of around 250 miles.

Since being selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency in 2009, the former British Army test pilot had dreamed of one day walking in space – a venture considered by many to be the pinnacle of space flight.

“When I first went into space, I desperately wanted to do a spacewalk, but you never can be sure,” Major Peake said during a new Sky News podcast that chronicles the story of Britain’s first spacewalk. “I was lucky that something broke on one of the solar panels, so we had to go out and replace it.”

A spacewalk would provide the opportunity to soak up a breathtaking view of Earth enjoyed by only a handful of people in human history, but it was not without its dangers and there were serious work to be done once Major Peake leaves the security of the airlock.

“We had to go all the way, carrying this component the size of a small refrigerator… if something is wrong, you have little time to fix it. If I had ripped one of my gloves by more than 6mm, it wasn’t, game over, the suit cannot hold enough pressure to keep you alive … so you are constantly aware of it. ‘place where you put your hands. “

On January 15, 2016, the moment Major Peake dreamed of came when he became the first official British astronaut to walk in space.

“You look down on this beautiful blue planet, the amount of water is hitting you on planet Earth when you see it from space, reflecting all of this wonderful sunlight. Things are always changing – sunrises and sunsets are also magical to see. It is an impressive sight. “

The astronaut considers the spacewalk to be the happiest moment of his career and hopes to venture into space again one day to complete another.
